Abesu

Abesu UK works with its sister organisation in Zambia, The Abesu Women’s Housing Co-operative, and a development partner, Peoples Process for Housing and Poverty in Zambia.

The purpose of the partnership is to empower and increase the skills and capacity of women in rural areas through support for the self building of houses and the establishment of sustainable livelihoods.

House completion rates have varied over the lifetime of the project since 2008 but through the partnerships direct work and by generating and encouraging and supporting self-build efforts on the part of others over 200 houses have been constructed by Abesu Co-operative members and neighbours, which now provide secure and healthy homes for well over 1,800 women and children.

The Project has build a Health Clinic (with women’s ward), nurses house, IT leaning Centre, shop and offices at its compound in Shiyala.

Commercial enterprises run by the Partnership, including a transport business, enlarged provisions and hardware shop, and proposed Lodge (hotel) are now directed towards securing Project financial self sustainability by March 2020.
