Jamii II offers a wide range of activities for Black communities in Wales to help improve health and wellbeing. Some of the activities hosted in Cardiff include Zumba, Yoga, Swimming, Walking, Nutrition classes, and Gardening. We chatted with 10 women who have participated in one or more of these activities to learn about why they joined and what they gained from these experiences. Here is what we learned.
Why Join Jamii Activities?
The women joined Jamii activities for various reasons:
- To meet new people and connect with others from different Black cultures.
- To enjoy some "me time" and improve their physical fitness and overall health (both physical and mental).
- To learn something new and have a fun, happy space.
- Some participants, especially those whose children had recently left home, wanted a positive activity to keep busy.
Sense of Belonging and Community
A recurring theme among participants was the sense of belonging and community they felt. Jamii activities provided a space where they could “be with women who look like us” and fostered a “sense of belonging”. Participants shared:
- “We have a lot in common. It is easier to make friends.”
- “I feel at home.”
- “We can just be. We don’t have to explain anything. I had an immediate sense of belonging.”
- “These activities give time for sisterhood and friendship. You can just be yourself.”
- “It’s easier to communicate. We are different but the same.”
- .“It is so challenging to go to a space where you have to put on your different layers. This is a safe space. I can exhale”.
They drew strength from the sisterhood, sharing life experiences and knowing they had friends. One participant, who had felt isolated and considered leaving the UK, said, “There is now something I can stay here for. We are like family.” Because Jamii offers this type of space, participants stay engaged and keep coming back for more.
Physical Health Benefits
Jamii activities aim to improve physical health, and all participants reported benefits such as improved mobility, increased strength, and weight loss. The range of activities, from Zumba and Yoga to Swimming and Walking, provides diverse ways to stay active and healthy. Regular participation in these activities not only enhances physical fitness but also instils a sense of discipline and routine in daily life.
- “The Zumba was empowering. I now have the confidence to try other things. I joined a Leisure Centre.”
- “Since joining the Jamii activities, I’ve noticed a significant improvement in my strength and stamina. I feel more energetic and motivated to stay active every day. It’s amazing how much my physical health has improved!”
- “The supportive community keeps me motivated to push myself further.”
This newfound confidence often leads participants to explore other physical activities, creating a positive cycle of health and fitness. They feel more energetic and capable, which spills over into other aspects of their lives. The supportive environment also ensures that everyone, regardless of their starting point, feels motivated to push their boundaries and achieve their health goals.
Mental Health Benefits
Having a consistent group activity where you feel like you belong also helps improve mental health. Jamii II creates a safe and welcoming space that fosters a sense of community and belonging, which is crucial for mental wellbeing. Participants often mention the joy of connecting with others who share similar experiences and backgrounds, which helps in alleviating feelings of isolation and loneliness.
The emotional support from these activities can be profound:
“You can be happy with community, not just family. I feel everything is possible to reach my goals.”
“When I treat myself to a Jamii activity, it releases stress and has a good influence on my family.”
Engaging in these activities provides a mental break from daily stresses, allowing participants to relax and recharge. This mental respite is essential for managing stress and improving overall mental health. The positive atmosphere and camaraderie help boost self-esteem and confidence, making participants feel more empowered in their daily lives. The shared experiences and mutual support found in Jamii II activities reinforce a sense of purpose and belonging, which are vital for maintaining mental health.
In summary, the physical and mental health benefits of Jamii II activities are substantial. By promoting regular physical activity and providing a supportive community, Jamii II helps participants achieve better health outcomes, increased confidence, and a greater sense of wellbeing.
Jamii II offers a variety of activities that cater to different interests and needs. Two popular examples are our swimming and nutrition classes, which have shown significant positive impacts on participants' lives.
Swimming Classes
Participants cherished that the swimming sessions were for women only, which was crucial in their decision to join. They enjoyed learning or improving their swimming skills, and it relieved stress:
- “Swimming relaxed me. When I was away from my problems, I could see solutions to them.”
One participant shared her personal victory of overcoming her fear of water and now enjoys swimming.
Nutrition Classes
Participants learned valuable skills in the nutrition classes, including:
- How to balance their diet and eat more fruits and vegetables.
- Portion control and understanding the impact of food on physical and mental health.
